Fan Experiences -
Ravina Park
I took in my 31st Tull show on August 13, at Ravina Park in Highland Park, Illinois and it turned out to be a brand new Tull experience compared to all of my other Tull concerts, dating back to June 6, 1972(Thick As A Brick tour). What happened was that I heard the show but saw very little of the activities down on stage. The layout of Ravinia is such that the 3200 reserved/covered seats form a semi-circular bowl behind which is a paved walkway with the lawn seating area sloping down and away behind the walkway. I had lawn seats for this particular show which removed any possibility of seeing the stage from my "spot". It addition, it rained, sometimes quite heavily, up until 15 minutes before Tull hit the stage.
Irregardless of the less-than-perfect conditions, I enjoyed the show most immensely. It was such a different experience from past shows in that I could only visualize in my head, the scene on the stage and could truly focus on the music and the sound quality. To put it mildly, the sound quality was absolutely PERFECT!! Only slightly distant, given the fact that the sound had to come out from the stage area and over the rise in front of me, but absolutely perfect nevertheless. I could clearly hear every cymbal flourish and tom tom note from Doane Perry, every Darboukah note from Jonathan Noyce on the "Water Carrier" and every beautiful flute note from Ian.
It was a wonderfully surrealistic sight when I looked around at all the people with their umbrellas and tarps as they chatted, ate their picnic "lunches", and indulged in various forms of attitude adjustments. I must extend my most sincere congratulations to the
band (for their great performance and set list) and to the sound crew for their usual magnificent job. They made the concert another memorable Tull experience for me, one that I will never forget. As
always- JETHRO TULL REWLS!
