Fan Experiences - The Viejas Casino
An absolutely perfect night for a concert, the Viejas Casino is an outdoor venue just outside of San Diego. The Young Dubliners opened the show with an impressive 45 minute set. To anybody who has not seen the Dubs you are in for a treat, these guys have always blown me away and tonight was no different.
Ian and the band came on at precisely 9:05 opening with an extended version of Living in the Past followed by Cross Eyed Mary, the band seemed to be really relaxed, Ian’s voice was in fine form, the 10 day break must have done them good. The set list has changed somewhat from what is on most websites. Not performed were SLOB, Jack in the Green
Sweet Dream, Boris Dancing and Pibroch. What was added though was an extended(?) version of Heavy Horses. Throughout the concert you could tell the boys were having fun playing, the interaction between Jonathon and Andy and Ian and Martin was a joy to watch. Ian as usual owned the stage prowling from one end to the other during the instrumental sections of the songs, as my wife says watching Ian is a show in itself.
Highlights for me at least were Song for Jeffery, Martin’s solo instrumental which segued into New Day Yesterday; Hunt by Numbers, and one of my all time favorite Tull songs Budapest. Throw in the usual concert standards and this was one memorable show.
This was my 20th Tull show and I never really thought of Tull as a jam band, but tonight makes me change my mind on that. Almost every song was extended or altered to make it that much more enjoyable to play and to listen to. This version of Tull is so tight that they appear to read each other’s minds during the show. Here’s to them staying this way for a long time.
