Fan Experiences - Orange County CPA
The classical backdrop and surroundings of Orange County Performing Arts Center provided an excellent venue for the spirited and energized Jethro Tull 2002 concert, Friday, May 31st. The two hour plus show was long enough to satisfy longtime Tull fans while certainly leaving everyone wanting more as encore "Locomotive Breath" came to a playful Beach Ball Cheerio conclusion.
Technically the band provided an outstanding show with epics performances from all instrumentalists but most notably guitarist Martin Barre and drummer
Doane Perry with masterful keyboards and very solid bass work. Ian Anderson's vocals were much improved over local appearances the last two years with the perfect acoustics of the Performing Arts Center receiving a nice assist. Anderson has mastered getting the most of his highs and lows as the years roll by and was brilliant throughout the set.
The opening number was "Living in the Past" and the set list included "Cross Eyed Mary", "Thick as a Brick",
"Jack in the Green", "Roots to Branches", "Song for Jeffery", "The Water Carrier", "Hunt by Numbers". Bouree was certainly a highlight and highly energized, though the only tune from "Crest Of a Knave" was "Hot
Night in Budapest" which was epically performed. "Elegy" as introduced by Anderson as "a highly soulful and moving piece" was incredible and certainly a surprise addition. The encore standards of "Aqualung" and the follow up of Locomotive Breath" were audience rousing and a thoroughly entertaining way of saying thanks and goodbye to long time loyal area Tull Fans.
It was a very special treat to have seen Jethro Tull both back in the seventies and once again now in 2002. I would highly recommend the current tour to both new Tull devotees and those from days gone by. The group is still very faithful to their music and do a masterful job presenting it's classic with pride and energy.
Bravo,
Richard P. Wade
